@dmm I am more interested in #amperecomputing which uses TSMC
A recent article in https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/23/business/economy/chip-makers-fight-federal-money.html highlights why they are likely to be favoured.
Quote: U.S. officials have also stressed the need to support a U.S. expansion by TSMC, in part because it produces leading-edge chips crucial to the military (i.e. ARM architecture).
However, for practical reasons, I'm going to stick with x86 for desktop, but I will begin moving to ARM in the cloud.
I did a short test of a 16 core #amperecomputing in #oraclecloud. A basic Gnome desktop is very responsive, not bad for less than $0.20/hour.
Although it is underpowered for my needs, the mac M2 pro chip does look like a good compromise. My wife and daughter liked the idea of another Mac mini they may inherit after I use it for legitamite work. They liked the idea that I would put #linux on it. One of the problems with apple M2 and #amperecomputing is software. .
Deciding between #amd #ryzen 32 or 64 core, #nvidia a10-a40 or #amperecomputing 128gb. Budget is $10k over 5 years. Some stuff is GPU, but not all. I'm handy with #linux a compiler. Apps mainly imaging , ai and Monte Carlo
