Am I the only person who starts stressing out the moment the MCs catch feelings in romance novels. Are they going to freak out and break up? I can feel it coming and I can't bear it.
This level of anxiety can't be good for me.

August slipped away without my noticing, so below is a belated update on the books I read last month:

Children of Ruin by Tchaikovsky, 3 stars

Feet of Clay by Pratchett, 5 stars

Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Brontë, 4 stars

Take What You Need by Novey, 4 stars

Jingo by Pratchett, 4 stars

The Feather Thief by Johnson, 4 stars

The Lady in the Tower by Weir, 3 stars

A good mix of my pet genres (fantasy and sci fi) with some nonfiction mixed in. @bookstodon

I’ve got a new-to-me genre of reading: low stakes, cozy fantasy.

A reviewer described this particular book (below) as, “if Dungeons and Dragons had a baby with Animal Crossing” and they’re not wrong.

It’s a nice balancer for the more serious works I usually have queued and stacked up to read and a perfect, quick read for a rainy, weirdly melancholy day like today.

Train commute read of late: Landmarks by Robert Macfarlane (2015). The book was recommended by the Grassmarket Community Project’s Scottish History Group (when we discussed about landscapes and the history of people’s perception on them). The chapter I read today (on John Alec Baker’s The Peregrine) deeply fascinates me. “The Peregrine is not a book about watching a falcon but a book about becoming a falcon” (155).

From “Reading Milosz”
by ADAM ZAGAJEWSKI

You always wanted to go
beyond poetry, above it, soaring,
but also lower, to where our region
begins, modest and timid.

Sometimes your tone
transforms us for a moment,
we believe—truly—
that every day is sacred,

that poetry—how to put it? —
makes life rounder,
fuller, prouder, unashamed
of perfect formulation.

Hullo friends (cakescrolling post tomorrow),

Today I'm asking readers/writers who are interested to check out my vids all about reading, writing and encouraging people to read (more).

Click the link, it goes outside of Mastodon to YT. youtu.be/8X1HaEBlOfs?feature=s

I'm looking for feedback, constructive preferred, on topics, what you think of this particular video, what books you'd like to see reviewed more (indy and/trad punished). I'm just working myself with 1 camera and my brain, so it's a humble endorse but I like it.

Thanks in advance, and if you have a blog or vlog yourself drop a link too.

Love to all, Moriarty.

Read: "Hyperion" (Dan Simmons). Okay, so, I cheated: I read the Endymion duet *before* this one, because they're what showed up at the thrift store. And I ended up really liking those. Going back now to Hyperion, I know how the author ended up weaving these plot threads together and ... I'm kinda impressed.

? I His Forgotten Bride by Aydra Richards, an amnesia story, yay!. My third by her and I'm really enjoying them; nice to be able to read historical romance again. She's kind of old fashioned but not Old Skool, if that makes sense.

Oh so I also finished Holly by . Warning! MASSIVE SPOILERS!

I was enjoying this very much until right near the end when the ableist language came out. How I wish people would stop using the word “psychotic” for cold, methodical serial killers. Psychosis is literally the opposite of those things, it’s irrational by its very nature (as I can tell you from personal experience). Maybe King meant psychopathic. That would come closer, but is still problematic. Why couldn’t he have just left it that the Harrisons were, as he said at other points, evil? Why say they were “like a crazy mother putting her baby in a microwave”? Again, that’s the opposite of rational. Any mother “crazy” enough to do that would be very, very mentally ill. And the Harrisons were not mentally ill. I find this so depressing, it’s clumsy and it’s lazy. A lot of the book is about unacceptable prejudice in terms of race and sexuality, but then rank ableism is somehow OK. Nope

At the beginning of the school year and while I am yet to drown in marking, managed to read a whole book this weekend that one of my new Year 9s proffered into my hands last week - The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino - which I gather loads of people already know about, but had completely passed me by. Gripping, really interestingly structured, and a fantastic crime thriller. I'm so happy I'll be able to discuss it with that student next week!

WARNING: spoilers

So I finished Pod (the dolphin book). I still don’t know what point(s) it was trying to make. We shouldn’t oppress other cultures? Egalitarian societies are better than patriarchies? Humans are evil and destroying the oceans? Gender fluidity/change is cool and natural? I really felt that the two misunderstood loner dolphins meeting and instantly falling in love despite being different species was a bit ick. Also I was annoyed that it didn’t really have an ending, just the pod swimming off to new waters, presumably as a set up for book 2. I’m glad I finished it but I only award it ⭐️⭐️⭐️

To make the world a better place for everyone (and with that I mean all life forms), I'm convinced we need our imagination. Forget dystopian literature, give me utopias.
Any recommendations? I Island by Aldous Huxley at the moment, which is interesting but also a bit dated. Ursula Le Guin's Always Coming Home is next on my list.

I finished by and started . amb is consistently one of the most engaging and thought provoking writers I’ve read - everything I’ve read of hers has shifted my thinking and helped me see the world differently. This series is so rich and full of so much emotional depth.
