Listening to #TheDeathofJaneLawrence by Caitlin Starling. So far it's been graphic, as it's about turn of the 19th century medicine, but not what I'd call creepy yet. Literally picked at random from the available now horror section in Libby, so who knows if it's any good, but I'm hopeful. I like the main characters- they both seem to be hiding something, and Jane reads as autistic and possibly ace, so personally relatable!

Finished up "The Beast You Are" by Paul Tremblay. Some really good, creative stories in there. I particularly liked "The Last Conversation," a story that's hard to review without spoilers, but that is beautiful and haunting, and that's told in second person, which is really hard to pull off.

Finished up Grady Hendrix's "Paperbacks from Hell" on the plane yesterday. Really fun tour through the cheese that is 70s/80s paperback horror. Hendrix is such a funny, entertaining writer, and the subject matter was great nostalgia, reminding me of a lot of things I read back in the day, plus leading me to a bunch of books that never hit my radar.

Just finished Joe Hill's 20th Century Ghosts. I've read his novels, but I don't usually love short story collections, so I'd skipped this until now. But there was some great stuff in here. The last story, in particular, Voluntary Committal, is some of his best work. I'd say my second favorite after NOS4A2.

Also, kudos for stuffing a final short story into the Acknowledgements, like Marvel throwing one last scene after the credits. Hilarious.

Just read Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste, which was pretty good, but adding the supernatural element to Jane Eyre kept making me think of that episode of Friends where Phoebe convinced Rachel that Jane Eyre is about cyborgs 😂

Finished @jeremycshipp's The Merry Dredgers. Creepy amusement parks? Goblins? Murder? It's got it all. But what it really has are some fantastic characters. Super original non-tropes.

Just finished Grady Hendrix's "How to Sell a Haunted House." I'd describe it as being like what, in D&D, you'd call "The Rule of Cool." If it's cool enough, it doesn't need to quite make sense. It is chock full of creepy AF scenes that worked even though I was like, "Wait. What?"

Just finished Echo by Thomas Olde Heuvelt. Really cool, original, and creepy idea. I always love the mixture of mountain climbing and horror (like Ararat by Christopher Golden.) And Echo was a particularly creative way to do that.

Went to see M3gan, which was *way* better than I was expecting, and I highly recommend it, but I'd mostly like to take this moment to complain about the trailer for Knock at the Cabin, which tells the *entire* story. If you haven't already read the book, avoid the trailer. I had to cover @nicegnome's eyes.

Still catching up with 2022 #shortfiction reading. This one, "Blooms of Sorrow" by @amandaghelms , grabbed me. The #horror comes in layers, mixing physical with psychological; the metaphors lie right at the surface, sharp enough to cut. A dysfunctional family trying to heal. Highly recommended. #Fiyah issue 24.
