#StandingStoneSunday a few pictures of the circle at Cullerlie, which has eight standing stones and eight cairns within the ring. I took these on a visit in 2018. #Scotland #prehistory #archaeology #AncientBritain

What’s your favourite ancient monument?
Here’s my local stone circle at Stanton Drew (in Somerset).
There are 3 circles + other features that combine to make it the 3rd largest complex of standing stones in England.
In the garden of the village pub - the Druid’s Arms - is a collapsed burial chamber that predates the stone circles.
Worth stopping for a pint 🍻

I’m charmed by these photos that @Morrisman has shared.
1. is a Bronze Age stone row called Harold’s Stones, in Trellech (which I’m guessing means three (tre) stones (lech like in cromlech)).
2. is especially exciting. It’s a carving from 1689 that documents those stones.
I love to see old depictions of older monuments. What did the people of Trellech make of those stones in 300+ years ago?

I wonder what Roman #exmoor under Emperor Claudius in AD54 would have been like… 🤔
Black & white of course & in winter bloody cold with some nasty drafts …💨 up your toga…😂
Nice views though 👀 Old Burrow Fortlet & Signal Station along the #somerset & #northdevon coastline of the #bristolchannel 👍 #exmoornationalpark

#FolkloreSunday: in #Cornwall the round rock at Men-An-Tol, near Madron, was thought to prevent and cure rheumatic ailments if one crawled naked hrough the stone or was pushed through by others while repeating a spell a magical number of times (usually 3 or 9).
