I'm getting much better at writing Greek characters (better than my handwriting in English some days).
But the character Ξ still looks unnecessarily elaborate, showing off even.
Maybe ξ is trying to make a point too.
Is it rational to like a word as much as I like ποιέω?
The way it rolls around in the mouth, the way it sounds, and in different conjugations. A beautiful word.
(It could just be me: cotīdiē and hodiē used to make me smile whenever I came across them in Latin sentences.)
New Penguin Classic just dropped.

I want to learn Esperanto for anarchist reasons.
I want to keep up my French because I've invested so much into it and I love it.
I want to learn Irish to connect with my ancestors in a very witchy, historic ways.
I want to continue learning ancient Greek for scholarly purposes and philosophical fun times.
Even me, the prince of ADHD, cannot manage this hunger.

The epigram in the Geoffrey Steadman edition of Ritchie’s Fabulae Faciles is:
"To make the ancients speak, we must feed them with our own blood."
- von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff
That accurately describes how I feel after I've handed in an ancient history or Latin assignment. 🩸 📜 🏛 🏺 🩸

@ou_phrontis Here's the quote in #ancientGreek and translated to English (not my translation).
Let me know if it can be improved 🤗
First classical Greek exam done, thus ending the semester. I'm usually wrecked after a language exam, so no exception there (and not over-committing at all 😬).
Still, time now to relax and/or get my notes in order for second semester Greek. (Yes, I'm a mature-age student, why do you ask?)

Hi! I'm a Dutch guy fresh in my thirties. I love #language and #linguistics. I studied #Latin and #AncientGreek. I play #piano, and have made some attempts to learn how to sing. I enjoy playing #BoardGames, and I also play in three #DungeonsAndDragons groups.
I was diagnosed #autistic around ten years old. Over the last few years, I've discovered some of the many ways autistic people connect through the internet, and I'm looking forward to doing more of that here.

Ancient Greek revision in the coffee shop is a completely normal way to spend a Sunday morning, yes?
(It is if you have an exam in 10 days.)
Imperfect: I was revising.
Also imperfect: More revision needed. 😅

@algernon I’d call you a Cynic, but in the #ancientgreek context of calling it like you see it in public, which I respect as #superversive 🫡
You know, I expected to learn new things about the ancient Greeks by learning their language, but I really did not expect this to be the first major lesson: how much they clearly loved a definite article.

"Milk" descends from Proto-Indo-European *h₂melǵ- [ħmelg, ɐ̥melg], something like this:

*h₂melǵ- also descended into Sanskrit मर्जति marjati “to clean, wipe”, something like this:

and into Ancient Greek ἀμέλγω amelgo, the initial [a] of which gives evidence for the pronunciation of *h₂:

Is it 'Chrest' or 'Christ'? Both forms appear in Tacitus and Suetonius, two Roman authors active in the 110s CE.
The answer lies mainly in Greek pronunciation and Latin transliteration conventions, with a dash of Christian palaeographic conventions.
