The epigram in the Geoffrey Steadman edition of Ritchie’s Fabulae Faciles is:
"To make the ancients speak, we must feed them with our own blood."
- von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff
That accurately describes how I feel after I've handed in an ancient history or Latin assignment. 🩸 📜 🏛 🏺 🩸

New additions to Attic Inscriptions Online include a funerary stele to Theophile (c. 400-350 BCE). Originally from the Piraeus, it is now in the collection of the RD Milns Antiquities Museum at the University of Queensland. (I've been fortunate to see it there a few times in the course of my ancient history studies at UQ.)

You know, I expected to learn new things about the ancient Greeks by learning their language, but I really did not expect this to be the first major lesson: how much they clearly loved a definite article.

Happy bread in Pompeii Day, to those who celebrate.
(I have not checked CIL to confirm the citation / the original Latin. But at least this meme includes a source, which is promising.)

Last night I dreamt I got my assignment back, receiving a reasonable mark and some useful feedback. I woke up, shook my head at dreaming about the assignment and went back to sleep... to dream a second time that I'd received the assignment back.
I got a different mark in each dream. The second mark was the better result, so clearly that's the one that's going to come true this week.

The Ikea cafeteria has very good to me for Latin study on a few occasions over the past two years - endless coffee and well lit.
Today I proved that it is equally good for studying classical Greek.

This looks great, from David Welch and James Patterson: https://classicseveryday.com/.
(Edited from the listserv post and the website.)
Classics Every Day provides a single, short passage of Latin and of Greek every day. Passages alternate between prose and poetry, most from shared texts on the PhD reading lists of Yale, Harvard, Michigan, and UChicago.
Visit the website, or subscribe and get them in your inbox every morning.

One of the things I love about learning an ancient language is stumbling across a word in the dictionary and wondering at the context that apparently required it to exist.
Four days in on classical Greek and I find this word:
πολύαιγος - defined as "abounding in goats".
πολύ-αιγος, ον

When I first started learning vocabulary for Latin adverbs two years ago, I couldn't get this line out of my head, so you can have it too.
If I had a ridiculous aide-mémoire for every Latin word, I'd never forget a thing.

I'm looking forward to reading this translation of The Aeneid by Shadi Bartsch. From the opening lines it feels fresh and vital.
Special mention of the beautiful edge painting on the Australian paperback edition, extending the stunning orange of the covers and spine around all sides of the book.

The new year reminds me of the ancient Greek god ‘Kairos’ (καιρός), the god of the perfect moment or timing. He helps bring the perfect moment to take some decisive action, or to make something happen.
May you see - and seize - the perfect moment for what matters most to you in 2023.

I didn't plan on graduating at this stage of my studies, but I'll admit it was strangely satisfying to be awarded a diploma for the ancient history and Latin I've done thus far.
(I'm re-enrolling next year to start ancient Greek and continue my major in ancient history, for possible postgrad study.)
