Arthur's O'on (oven) at Stenhousemuir, a unique victory monument or temple, was Scotland's best-preserved Roman building until, tragically, it was dismantled for its stone in 1743. The mill and dam made from it collapsed in a storm a mere five years later. #Roman #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #AncientSiteSunday

This little but #SuperbOwl from a decorated Roman facade was rediscovered in Caerwent church, Wales. The Roman stone is built into the church's nave; here, it's shown as part of a colour reconstruction. Caerwent is the site of Venta Silurum, capital of the Silures tribe. The Temple of Jupiter in Split, Croatia, was converted to a Church in the 6th century; in spite of this, pagan images survive, looking down on visitors from reliefs above the doors. Hercules in his lionskin; Apollo; Triton or a gigante #Roman #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #AncientSiteSunday

Gadara, Jordan, perhaps best known for the biblical Gadarene Swine, has Roman streets made from basalt, many with ruts carved by the wheels of innumerable carts. Cream-coloured column barrels on the street were toppled by an ancient earthquake #Roman #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #AncientSiteSunday

Box flue tiles lined walls in Roman bath-houses. Air, heated in a hypocaust, rose up through box flue tiles and sideways, through holes into neighbouring tiles, like smoke and hot air up a chimney. Each box flue tile had combing, which acted as a key for the wall's rendered surface. Unusually, this one was filled with cement and, with others, supported the hypocaust floor of the hot bath room at Newport Roman villa, Isle of Wight, UK #Roman #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #AncientSiteSunday

The 21m-high Arch of Hadrian in Jerash, Jordan, commemorates the emperor Hadrian's state visit in AD129-130. The arch was substantially restored 2005-2007, and would have had a triumphal statue on it. Academics debate the sites visited by Hadrian on his state tours. Anthony R Birley (Hadrian, The restless emperor) states that Hadrian held audience and sat in judgement at Jerash, and several other statues commemorated the visit #Roman #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #AncientSiteSunday

The #Roman Baths at Bath in England are an incredible survival, and they have some great Roman items on display. This stone relief shows a figure who holds a leash restraining a hound that's pursuing a leaping hare; the hare has jumped up into the foliage of a tree! #AncientSiteSunday #RomanArchaeology #Archaeology

For #AncientSiteSunday a fantastic aerial photo of the #amphitheatre in #Verona. Built around 30 AD, it held up to 30,000 spectators. It's one of the largest surviving #Roman amphitheatres and now used for opera performances.

For #AncientSiteSunday, we are standing in the theatre at #Ostia Antica, a few short miles outside of #Rome itself. A beautiful day in November many years ago, with birdsong and wind as the only companions.
