Just a light little film for a ’s masterpiece, . Long as it is, I love this film and the questions it raises about the human condition, set in a distopian, vaguely science-fiction frame. Highly respected, highly recommended!

Tarkovsky fashions a breathtaking meditation on his usual themes: faith, memories and sacrifice. It's filled with unforgettable images. We follow a Russian poet Andrei (Oleg Yankovsky) accompanied by his translator, a Rafaelite beauty (Domiziana Giodano) in an ancient hot springs hotel in Italy. There he meets Domenico (Bergman regular Erland Josephson), a local kook who had locked himself and his family up in his house for 7 years, believing the end of the world is imminent. The poet feels a kinship with the madman. The film slowly progresses to an unforgettable speech by Domenico in Rome. He calls for human unity and urges us to go back to our origins. Then he douses himself with gasoline and sets himself on fire. The ending with Andrei carrying a candle through the drained outdoor hot springs really made me very emotional.

Andrei Rublev, famous monk painter in the Middle Ages, is both the subject and spectator coming in and out of focus. It's the young bell caster part at the end that really packs the punch. It’s a contemplation on art, the god-given talent vs Human Will. The reckless young man challenges himself in a grand scale. This tickles now old & reclusive Rublev who had given up painting. Stunning, soul stirring work.

Tarkovsky’s last film is a beautiful religious parable. It’s a dreamlike, meditative, all encompassing work. Uninterrupted climax scene of Alexander burning down the house is perhaps his finest technical feat & a true cinematic tour-de-force. It ends with the young son watering the tree as Maria looks on. Shot by the great Sven Nykvist, The Sacrifice is a fitting finale for illustrious filmmaker who wanted to elevate film's status equal to other art forms.

Memories, dreams and fantasies all mingle in Solaris. How much do we know about other people? Is our existence just compounded memories of others? Tarkovsky is using the Sci-fi genre as a fodder to question our reality and contemplate human existence in perhaps the loneliest place we can imagine- outer space. Solaris is a deeply humbling experience.
