The most likely cause of another Andrew Malkinson type travesty of justice is surely the defunding of the public legal system and the increased funding of the police? How can you increase police funding while stripping the legal system to the bone? There's no counterbalance to corrupt police forces framing people to improve clear up rates (I'm assuming that was their motivation). Yet that's exactly what this government has done.

The derails of the miscarriage of just get worse.... after three years the evidence was there that pretty clearly threw his conviction into serious doubt... but it would be about THIRTEEN years until he was freed....

For the to be effective justice has to be seen to be done... the & the in this case have served both the victim & Malkinson very badly.

Police and prosecutors in the Andrew Malkinson case knew there was another man’s DNA on the victim’s clothes in 2007 – three years after he was wrongly convicted of rape – but he remained in prison for another 13 years.

This is a shocking read and raises the question how many more cases there are like this.

"Appeal court overturns Manchester rape conviction of man who spent 17 years in jail"

doesn't trust the state, as it is largely unaccountable, and doesn't like to admit its mistakes.

I hope Mr Malkinson gets to use the degree he earned while banged up for a crime he didn't commit.
