This morning I woke up with the haunting guitar lick from How Soon Is Now in my head - by far their most commercialized track.

For disclosure, while I respect it immensely, I was never part of this particular music scene. My introduction was this track being played ad-nauseam in a Labatt beer ad.

The Smiths were *the* band of my teenage years. As I bit of an outsider at school, their songs and image really spoke to me. I've always loved the way guitar and bass intertwined and kept the songs moving.

Andy Rourke. Back in Indy he DJ'd and it was a grossly under attended gig. Regardless, he joined a handful of us our favorite dive bar. There were six of us in the entire place. We played pool. Got drunk. Danced around to music. Sent him to his hotel in a cab. It was a night I'll never forget.

His bass lines are full of bittersweet memories for me, but, that's the point of the Smiths.

May his memory be a blessing.
