By 1913, we see for the first time in the tradition a woman in a *portrait de la chute d'un âne* For , it is the end of the world they knew.

Sadly, on the first day of April 1914 the Town Council banned the *chutes des ânes* as World War 1 was due to start in August; but every year on April 1st people remember their tradition with a special meal of : fresh water cod fished from the river Seine eaten with burnt pommes frites.

Special:
The Accidental Donkeys of

In a Paris suburb 1901-1914 the ‘Belle Epoque’, more people fell off donkeys than anywhere else.
‘Plessis’ is a village enclosed by a fence. ‘Robinson’ is from the tree house in ‘The Swiss Family Robinson,’ as the town’s wine bars were all in tree houses.
Drinkers rode home on donkeys but often fell off. The new art of photography led to the citizens being pictured on postcards falling off their donkeys.

I'm looking forward to revealing the full story of the *chutes des ânes* in our special exclusive report tomorrow.

A friend asked why I spent so much time researching this history of people falling off donkeys in France, so I explained that it keeps me mentally alert and provides an interesting topic to talk about at dinner parties.

He asked if I have been invited to any dinner parties recently.

Oh wait... 🤔

After eleven decades of silence, our special report will tell the story of a municipality in France during the Belle Epoque, where people fell off their donkeys every day.

Could we blame the main street wine bars which were located in tree-houses? Or was the low alcohol tax in the suburbs to blame?

Did the growth of amateur photography encourage show-offs to ride their donkeys in a dangerous manner? Was the mayor culpable?

The truth will be revealed on .

Poster for "Antoinette dans les Cévennes"... also re-titled in the English version as "My Donkey, My Lover & I", which has to be in the running for the top 10 worst film titles of all time.

Few donkey films pass me by, but I just chanced upon this review of a French D-movie featuring donkeys from a year ago "Antoinette dans les Cévennes"...

It looks entirely missable but I'll watch anything with a donkey in it... 🤗

Dear God, let it be with these donkeys that I come,
And let it be that angels lead us in peace
To leafy streams where cherries tremble in air,
Sleek as the laughing flesh of girls; and there
In that haven of souls let it be that, leaning above
Your divine waters, I shall resemble these donkeys,
Whose humble and sweet poverty will appear
Clear in the clearness of your eternal love.

"Priere pour aller au paradis avec les ânes"
by Francis Jammes

Merveilleuse lecture du poème pour Julie Dratwiak (Extrait du recueil "Quatorze prières" de Francis Jammes.)

The English translation of "A Prayer to Go to Heaven with the Donkeys" follows, accompanied by photos of a family group with donkeys walking through Conques, where the relics of Saint Foy are kept: a saint associated with various donkey miracles.

"L'Âne Savant"
by Francis Jammes

If you do not know the beautiful poem "Priere pour aller au paradis avec les ânes" you will shortly: an English translation will soon appear here. Meanwhile here is a lesser-known donkey poem by Francis Jammes.

The 'wise donkey' reference is to the donkey acts once seen in provincial circus in France in byegone days (as seen in the circus scene in Bresson's classic film 'Au Hasard Balthassar'.)
