I really like ice cream. When I say I like ice cream what I mean is that if it is in the house, I'm likely to gorge myself and eat it until I'm miserable. That is one reason why my wife doesn't buy it except for special occasions and then only in pint containers. Another reason is that it's off my menu along with most sweet foods, bread, and others. There was a time that I thought that it would be insane to give up eating all the things that I like, but then here we are.

What I've discovered is that aging involves lifestyle changes. These changes don't just start when you get older, but they are incremental over the years if things are going right. If they are not, then perhaps there is a maturity problem.

Dark sky.

These birds are anhingas. I was sitting outside late yesterday afternoon watching clouds pass when a flock of about a dozen of these appeared off to the northeast. They circled around long enough for me to get some pictures. Then flew out of sight again. I wonder where they're headed. Unfortunately, the weather being what it was and the anhinga being almost all black, their pictures are just silhouettes.

"A dark body stealthily swims through a lake with only a snakelike head poking above the surface. What may sound like the Loch Ness monster is actually an Anhinga, swimming underwater and stabbing fish with its daggerlike bill. After every dip, it strikes a regal pose on the edges of shallow lakes and ponds, with its silvery wings outstretched and head held high to dry its waterlogged feathers. Once dry, it takes to the sky, soaring high on thermals stretched out like a cross." - allaboutbirds.org

Note this is the only bird (in #NorthAmerica at least) where the common, genus, species, family names are all the same! 🙂

Took this photo of an anhinga in 2007 at a park in Orlando. Called snake
birds as they resemble snakes while swimming through the water looking for food. Their feathers are not waterproof, so it's common to see them perched with wings spread to dry them out (as seen here).

Fun fact… the North American #Anhinga is the only bird where the common, species, genus, and family name (Anhingidae) are all the same!

They look similar, both catch live fish underwater and can be seen drying their wings in the sun afterward. But they are in different biologic families and genera.

The mostly black bird is an #Anhinga. We have a similar species in #Florida commonly referred to as a “snake bird” because it often sticks only its neck out of the water when fishing. It spears rather than grabs its prey! #birds.😊
