Episode 2 of Punching Cards, the podcast about all things intelligent is now out!

This time we talk about non-human animal intelligence, especially in birds and in our chimp and bonobo cousins, with cognitive biologist Alice Auesperg and philosopher Richard Moore. Cameo by a tool-using cockatoo!

To be taken in by a magic trick, you have to be capable of enacting what you think the illusionist is doing in the trick. An interesting demonstration of embodied cognition.

Non-human animals are so cool! And, I’m glad humans are starting to really explore all the coolnesses of in a -based way.

Late to this, but very cool for nonhuman-primate enthusiasts like me: "Experts are reevaluating prehistoric Pleistocene-era sites in Brazil previously believed to have been home to ancient humans. It turns out, the 50,000-year-old stone tools discovered in excavations are probably the work of capuchin monkeys." Research by archaeologist Agustín M. Agnolín and paleontologist Federico L. diary entry 3:

Suka is a 9 year old husky and she's protective over her food. If a cat gets too close, she will snap at them.

However, over the past few months Suka has started whining whenever a cat moves toward her food.

I feel like she's telling me, "mommy, please stop the cat before I do something bad."

She does it consistently and I would love to know what she's actually thinking!

A cortico-collicular circuit for orienting to shelter during escape

When faced with predatory threats, escape towards shelter is an adaptive action that offers long-term protection against the attacker.

the mouse retrosplenial cortex (RSP) and superior colliculus (SC) form a circuit that encodes the shelter-direction vector and is specifically required for accurately orienting to shelter during escape.

I just read this very interesting piece by Shelly Volsche et al. where they propose a more ethical framework for carrying out and reporting on research in and . Among other things, they proposed that past research deemed problematic should be marked as such when cited, including a mention to whether its methodology and husbandry is deficiently described, and to any welfare or ecological validity concerns. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/fu

miRNAs may play a fundamental role in the development of complex brains.

Major RNA innovation of soft-bodied cephalopods is an expansion of the microRNA (miRNA) gene repertoire. The only comparable miRNA expansions happened, notably, in vertebrates.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of exchanging ideas about the possibility of thinking in the cognitive processes of non-human animals. Woosuk Park wrote an exciting chapter on this, so I am sharing it with you:

One of the most complicated works I have written with Prof. Jordi Vallverdú (UAB) is the following chapter on in minimal cognition through .

Currently, I am working to integrate this idea based on human animals into non-human animal (). It's a challenge and a pleasure to write () with biologists (), ethologists (), etc.
