Getting ready to chat about property and nonhuman animals for The Animal Turn’s series on Animals and Politics: https://www.theanimalturnpodcast.com/ They have some great thinkers lined up, I’m looking forward to listening to the other episodes.

TERRIBLE!! Iceland to resume whaling under stricter conditions - "no way to make harpooning whales at sea anything other than cruel and bloody, and no amount of modifications will change that." #AnimalWelfare #AnimalEthics https://phys.org/news/2023-08-iceland-resume-whaling-stricter-conditions.html

Agreement of farm animal behaviour and welfare studies with the ARRIVE Essential 10 https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/17470161231183100 #AnimalEthics "we encourage editorial committees and reviewers to be stricter about the acceptability of manuscripts when the researchers do not report basic criteria, such as the ethical statement."
I've just sent off the final corrected proofs of my book. Really happy to have been approached a couple of years ago by Bristol University Press to write my first book. It has so far been an incredibly positive experience, I can't recommend them, along with my editor George Miller, enough. https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/what-are-animal-rights-for #animalrights #animalethics #veganism #philosophy #ethics

Me to my dad : I am not gonna participate in #EidAlAdha this year. I don't believe it's religiously required to sacrifice a sheep. You can worship in other ways. Besides, animals feel pain too and I don't want to see the process or results. I don't even eat meat and I try to reduce suffering when I can.
Dad : Understandable. Here's a picture of me skinning the sheep

Thank you for sharing this. Quite brutal intentions of Nueva Pescanova I think.
Octopus should not be consumed by humans.
Then no business by farming.
Simple as that.
Btw massive company, should be closely observed, big trawler fleet to empty the oceans etc. https://www.nuevapescanova.com/en/
A worthwhile read on animal ethics and journal publishing:
Janine McCarthy, "When journals don’t meet their ethical guidelines, will anyone hold them accountable?" (#RetractionWatch 17/3/2023).
McCarthy highlights the notorious #MDPI journal Nutrients, which she argues "has a particularly bad record of accepting studies with egregious violations of ethical norms when it comes to experiments on animals."

See if you can tell the difference between conditions at Red Tractor Certified Birkmarsh Hall, 2023: https://sentientmedia.org/spy-cams-pork-mega-farm/ & Red Tractor Certified Flat House Farm in 2020: https://viva.org.uk/animals/campaigns/pigs/investigation-flat-house-farm/
or these from 2020: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/pigs-chickens-factory-farm-video-footage-b2207030.html
Wait for the National Farmers‘ Union to again claim that ‘British farming aims to consistently deliver world-leading, high welfare standards‘. I suspect they‘re right & those videos show relatively good conditions. #animalrights #animalethics #farming

Yesterday, I wrote a little preface to my book, describing undercover footage of horrific treatment of factory farmed pigs at a farm near me in 2020. I concluded that I'd been seeing footage like this for 20 years with little or no improvement. That farm was Red Tractor certified. Today, news breaks of yet another case, again of a Red Tractor certified farm. Red Tractor is by industry, for industry, & no protection for animals. https://sentientmedia.org/spy-cams-pork-mega-farm/ #animalrights #animalethics
My first attempt at writing a book is real enough that it has a publication date and a preorder option now. I’d better get on with finishing the second draft then! Very exciting. Looking back, I’m very happy with the decision I made back in circa 2009 to have a go at changing career and becoming an academic, it seems to have worked out OK. https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/what-are-animal-rights-for #animalrights #animalethics #philosophy
