Patagonian opossums live in the Patagonian steppe in Argentina. They mostly eat birds and mice because of the lack of bugs and fruit
Their tails are shorter and thicker than other opossums, and they use them to store fat. Their tails are also usually more rounded at the ends
Also they have really strong jaws for an opossum because of their predatory diet. And their teeth are a lot longer and sharper than other opossums
#TIL from https://www.iheart.com/podcast/stuff-to-blow-your-mind-21123915/episode/the-monstrefact-auto-ghouls-of-groombridge-station-115302035/ that shrews, unable to hibernate, shrink their brains, spines and other organs to reduce energy needs during the winter, then regrow it during the spring.
(Side note: shrews are also one of the very few venomous mammals.)
Imagine that - shrinking, and making yourself dumber, to get through lean times. There's a good sci-fi story in that somewhere.

I've seen a meme saying it's good stuff was named by serious people in the past because now we would call rabbits Bouncey McFlopface or whatever... but you'd only think so if you don't remember your etymology.
"Mastodon" you may have heard means "Boob Tooth" (Greek: Mastos + odont). But did you know:
Porpoise: "Pig fish"
Hippopotamus: "River horse"
Panda: "Cat bear"
The wise elders of the past were just as much a bunch of goofballs as anyone today.

This is also known as the "Hippopotamus Fallacy" in statistics. #animalfacts
Did you know cats can see color? Blue-violet and yellow-green hues are easiest. They can't see red-orange hues though.
