Patagonian opossums live in the Patagonian steppe in Argentina. They mostly eat birds and mice because of the lack of bugs and fruit

Their tails are shorter and thicker than other opossums, and they use them to store fat. Their tails are also usually more rounded at the ends

Also they have really strong jaws for an opossum because of their predatory diet. And their teeth are a lot longer and sharper than other opossums

from iheart.com/podcast/stuff-to-bl that shrews, unable to hibernate, shrink their brains, spines and other organs to reduce energy needs during the winter, then regrow it during the spring.
(Side note: shrews are also one of the very few venomous mammals.)
Imagine that - shrinking, and making yourself dumber, to get through lean times. There's a good sci-fi story in that somewhere.

Are 'Deer Xing' signs enough to save wildlife? It's a definite no, but millions of dollars in U.S. grants are now being put to help:

Many of us know that octopuses are incredibly intelligent, but did you also know that their nervous system is largely decentralized?

Platypus :
Finds prey through electrolocation; the bill can sense electric fields generated by muscular contractions.
Milk seeps into grooves in the female's abdomen, where the young can lap it up.
The male has venomous ankle spurs that can kill a dog or incapacitate an adult human.
On land, they walk on knuckles to protect webbed feet.
They chew food with keratin pads. They don't have teeth.
The species lost their acid-filled stomach.

One of the most unusual facts shared in today's episode is that it's possible to become a certified rat tickler,

because apparently that's such a useful skill in scientific studies.

I've seen a meme saying it's good stuff was named by serious people in the past because now we would call rabbits Bouncey McFlopface or whatever... but you'd only think so if you don't remember your etymology.

"Mastodon" you may have heard means "Boob Tooth" (Greek: Mastos + odont). But did you know:

Porpoise: "Pig fish"
Hippopotamus: "River horse"
Panda: "Cat bear"

The wise elders of the past were just as much a bunch of goofballs as anyone today.

Did you know cats can see color? Blue-violet and yellow-green hues are easiest. They can't see red-orange hues though.
