On this day in 1893, Anna Julia Cooper delivered a paper at the World’s Congress of Representative Women. She was one of five Black women invited to speak at the event, with an audience primarily comprising white women.
Anna was born into an enslaved family in America. At the age of 67 she earned a PhD. The 4th Black woman to do so.

WIP - Thinking about Anna J Cooper receiving her PhD in France, writing her dissertation in French while working her day job as a teacher in DC - at 67 years old! #historymatters #annajcooper #representationmatters

What I more firmly believe as I continue my WIP research - DC needs to be a state. Congressional members should advocate on their constituents' behalf - but isn't it some sort of conflict of interest that they can interfere at will with DC's interest in favor of the state that elected them? Especially when they are clearly not DC advocates. Their impact is doubled - for their state AND DC - and in the case of DC, they were not elected by its citizens. Enlighten me. #annajcooper #barbarapope
