@heejinlee Thanks for mentioning THE GOLDEN ERA, #AnnHui's biopic of Chinese writer #XiaoHong (1911-1942). An intriguing, absorbing & moving film, with an impressive performance by #TangWei.
"Xiao Hong led a rough, itinerant life & died a refugee in Japanese-occupied Hong Kong at age 30. Her writing career spanned less than a decade, but her works have stood as models for later generations of writers. A central theme in her work was the fate of women under patriarchy."
Must read her work now.
Not the cheeriest of movies to end the year on, but #AnnHui's THE STORY OF WOO VIET (1981) is a gripping & powerful film. Shattered hopes await #CherieChung & #ChowYunFat in this part political drama, part gangster film about Chinese-Vietnamese refugees trying to flee to the US but who get caught up in Manila's gritty underworld with tragic outcome. If they ever start handing out a Nobel Prize in Film, then #AnnHui deserves to win. Her stunning, semi-autobiographical film SONG OF THE EXILE (1990) is a poignant intergenerational drama about troubled relationships, diasporas & belonging. With outstanding performances by #MaggieCheung & #LuHsiaoFen. Look forward to re-watching this one as well. [2/3]

#NYE plans: I normally stay in, drink lots of beer, & re-watch 2 or 3 films by a favourite director. Last year it was Almodóvar (LAW OF DESIRE, HIGH HEELS, & THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET).
This year it's #AnnHui, a key figure of Hong Kong's New Wave Cinema of the '70s & '80s. Starting off with THE SECRET (1979), an unnerving, atmospheric whodunit, starring the amazing #SylviaChang, who becomes an unwitting sleuth grappling with her friend's murder. [1/3]
