I just learned that there is a market for annotated books--not from some literary giant's personal collection, but from contemporary readers, many (most? all?) with Instagram or TikTok accounts that are devoted to annotations.

I'm baffled by the market. What is the value of buying an annotated modern paperback? Why would someone purchase such an annotated book instead of personally annotating a copy with one's own thoughts?
