And speaking of 1980s movies, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN remains a fairly preposterous story. (The less said about that melodramatic and anticlimactic fistfight that comes far too late in the picture, the better.) But it works -- in large part because Richard Gere was dead ass serious about the role. All the abuse Mayo takes from Foley in this famous scene was real. The story goes that Gere insisted on being drenched, physically broken, and put through the paces in order to sell the scene. And if he hadn't, would we have bought "I've got nowhere else to go"? Richard Gere was never quite that hungry as an actor ever again.
Fun fact: a friend and former roommate used to reenact this scene over abs over in our twenties. And we jostled over who got to play Mayo. Perhaps because we both admired Gere's gutsy masochism. We still play out this scene over the phone to this day.

Zach doing that obstacle course? And doing it so well? So sexy #AnOfficerAndAGentleman
Whoa. Major homophobia and misogyny. But I guess I am not surprised given movie is from 80s #AnOfficerAndAGentleman
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the beginning of An Officer and a Gentleman. There is some major daddy issues up in here #AnOfficerAndAGentleman
