I can't stop staring into the eyes of Mary S. Peake of the 1860's, who looks downright modern. I'm reading her letters written in 1861 in Virginia, and am mesmerized. She clandestinely taught slaves and free blacks before the Civil War. Wish I could time travel (briefly) to speak with her. #histerdons #Antebellum
