Even a #Conservative jurist and essayist I know from the #Antebellumera recognized that original meanings behind the Constitution had to evolve according to popular will, a position more enlightened and sophisticated than the 6 GOP hacks on today's #SCOTUS .

#NewYork #Merchant Robert Lenox wrote a letter in 1822, mentioning Timothy Pickering as a possible candidate to be a director of a bank.
Timothy Pickering? Wait, is that the same guy I remember from Garry Wills's book on TJ, JA, and slavery that @CPostel once assigned my M.A. class many years ago?
Sure enough, it was! Pickering died in 1829.
