In my experience, the moon is a photographic subject that rarely pays off (astrophotography aside). The moon is small in the sky, and the wide angle lenses used so often in photography make it smaller still. Once in a while, however, the moon can contribute to a photograph. Also, when trying to be quiet and take a picture of a bunch of red-winged blackbirds I was not nearly as stealthy as I give myself credit.
Next time instead of the 70-200, I'll have to pull out the 200-500 so they don't see me coming.
