John Anthony Burgess Wilson (25 February 1917 – 22 November 1993), who published under the name Anthony Burgess, was an English writer and composer. Although Burgess was primarily a comic writer, his dystopian satire "A Clockwork Orange" remains his best-known novel.

This is one reason FW appealed so much to Anthony Burgess (himself a composer): "when the classical critics turn on Finnegans Wake the beams of their bull's-eye lanterns, they see something unique, unsubmissive to their waking rules, and hence to be condemned for what it does not pretend to be rather than appraised in terms of what it is.
