@alexwild
One of my favorites, tiny and shiny.
These nest in rotting logs I set out in my garden for this purpose.

Okay, for , for real, my happiest bee discovery this year was seeing and learning about cellophane bees, _Colletes_.

It's a warm, sunny day after soaking rains eartlier this week. That means it's time for my cellophane bees to emerge in force!

This is my 16th year of observing this population in my garden. I'm always excited to see "my little bees".

Here's my blog post from the first year I noticed them, in 2008.

In nearly every hole there was a little miner bee! Most were very shy and would immediately scoot back down the burrow, lol. But I soon found that by putting the camera at the right distance and waiting for them to come back out, I could get close-ups.

LOOK AT THESE CUTE FUCKING BEES

I've seen four bee species in my garden over the past few days, from largest to smallest:
- Large Eastern carpenter bee, Xylocopa virginica ssp. virginica, our largest bee in NYC
- Eastern bumble bee, Bombus impatiens, a freshly emerged gyne (fertile female) looking for a home to establish her colony
- Mining bee, Andrena species, too distant and skittish for close inspection
- Golden-green sweat bee, Augochlora pura (my favorite), checking out a log in my front yard

Our largest , the Eastern carpenter ( verginica ssp. virginica) is well-known to those in proximity to outdoor wooden structures. Females carve out long tunnels underneath protected wood, e.g. porch rails, eaves.

Males emerge first in Spring. Territorial, they will fly right at you! Harmless to us.
