I remember spending some time in medical school anatomy labs as an undergraduate in Manchester and all the donated bodies having blue-black lungs. When you live in a city with polluted air, you're a smoker or get exposed to dust or smoke, the black carbon particles accumulate in the tissue of your lungs so you're carrying them around for the rest of your life.
