I welcome @EUCouncil's adoption of a General Approach on @EU_Commission's proposal for EU #antiSLAPP Directive.

This is urgently needed to defend targeted threats against #EUdemocracy.

It will provide strong safeguards against SLAPPs in cross-border civil proceedings.

SLAPPs are an abuse of national justice systems, adding more burden to already overburdened courts. It's also in the interest of Member states to fight abusive lawsuits, says EU Commission's Pia Lindholm. #AntiSLAPP

As pointed out by Hungarian lawyer Bea Bodrogi, not all cases against journalists and media outlets are abusive or should be considered as SLAPPs. Journalists can make mistakes and people have the right to seek justice to defend their rights. #AntiSLAPP

Hungarian human rights lawyer Bea Bodrogi insists on the need for a real mindset shift among lawyers and judges to help stop abusive lawsuits. The Commission's #AntiSLAPP measures - legislative and non legislative -are an effective way to get there.
