What people who post this idiotic slogan don’t want us to remember is that it’s out of context. In fact, it’s not even the whole sentence.

What Rousseau was quoted as saying is: “‘When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich.’”

Note the whole “when” part; it was a conditional statement, and these conditions have not been met.

He was saying that, if we allow people to be desperate, we should expect them to take desperate actions. Makes sense.

But the modern-day rebels who are bastardizing this quote aren’t starving. They’re not even hungry, just greedy.

They’re cosplay socialist revolutionaries, and they are fools.

Bluntly, this is false.

The work ethic is the ethic of those who do work and want to be paid for it. Those who do an honest day’s labor and receive honest pay for it.

I own a house. I’ve had to fire contractors who lacked this ethic, who were content to take my money without providing the work that I paid them for. Who did the 20% of the work that yielded 80% of the results and never did bring the task to completion. Who cut corners and endangered my health and safety, just because they thought they could get away with it.

This proved to be self-defeating; they lost money because they were fired. In contrast, I had contractors who did their job and were brought back for further renovations.

Being willing to do the work you agreed to do is what makes you worth hiring and retaining. This is a virtue, not a scam.

Want a real scam? Anticapitalism, which is too dishonest even admit what it’s pro.

1. The stated goal of socialism is to create a society where everyone has an equal share.

Contrasted against a society defined by a hierarchy that maintains inequality by force, this sounds nice. But it doesn’t hold up to analysis. It may have its heart in the right place, more or less, but its head is hollow.

The short version is that, no, I don’t think it’s a worthy goal, just a hallucination. It is ultimately just the equal and opposite extreme to laissez-faire capitalism and fascism, and just as much a failure. It’s the other road to hell, paved with the better intentions.

It cannot, even in principle, create the abundance of wealth that would then be given to each according to their need. Again, more on that in the above-linked essay.

If that makes me your political enemy, so be it. I can live with that. If both extremes – communists and fascists – hate me then I think I’m in a good place. And if anarchists hate me, then I’m fucking golden.

1. Vanguardism doesn’t work, but neither does anything else. That was the point of my essay on Marxist magic: it’s not real.

The problem isn’t how to transition from capitalism to the goal of communism, it having a clear, realistic goal in the first place.

To repeat myself, all we have is a description, not a recipe, and just because something can be described in vague terms does not mean it can be made real.

Christianity defines God by negating real qualities, leading to a logically impossible being. Marxism, despite opposing religion, is guilty of the same.

In order to be something more than anti-capitalism, communism has to be concrete and applicable to our species, not some eusocial hive creature. It has to transcend class grievance politics and economic reductionism. It has to actually make sense. And it doesn’t!

In the end, communism is the perpetual motion machine of political economics. At this point, we don’t need to look at the designs for a particular failed attempt to rule it out because we know that thermodynamics prevents any of them from working.

This is the time of late-stage socialism, where all hope is gone. It’s been crushed by the reality of endless failures.

1. The reason I included that quote from Lenin was to point out that, according to Marxism-Leninism, socialism is a transitional state on the way to communism.

They don’t want to achieve socialism and stop because they know that this stage is marred by authoritarianism; what Weydemeyer called the dictatorship of the proletariat.

The problem, of course, is that nobody really knows what the next step would be or how to get to it. Especially not Marx.

The only reasonable conclusion we can draw from this is that there is no next step and no way to get to it. An unreasonable conclusion is that we can build yet another perpetual motion machine, and unlike all the previous ones, this one will work.

Which was, of course, the whole point of the essay, and you never did address it. So I’m going to give you a chance:

Democrats are liberals, not socialists. So when the Republicans call us socialists (or communists), they’re just lying. Arguably, to a fascist populist, everyone to their left looks “socialist”, or maybe they just don’t care about the truth.

However, there are actual socialists who run as Democrats, even though they’re not. These people are democratic socialists, which refers to any form of socialism that includes voting. Cuba and the USSR are examples.

In contrast, there’s social democracy, which is not socialism at all. Rather, it’s a moderately-left political stance; roughly speaking, the European equivalent of American (social) liberalism.

Socialism is communism. Or, rather, socialism is the attempt to make communism. The USSR was technically socialist, not communist. In fact, it’s right there in the name.

Circling around to socialists infiltrating the DNC, they’re socialist populist, and when they call themselves socialists, it hurts liberals because it gives credence to the Republican lie that the DNC is socialist.

They know this and don’t care, because they hate the DNC and want to take it over.

Does that sound nuts? Yeah, I thought so, too, but they keep insisting:

@foodnotbombswpb has been issued three citations for distributing food at their weekly food share along with independent journalist of WPB Government Watch.

“A disgrace to our First Amendment rights and a blatant act of cruelty” said one before vowing to fight the charges. @foodnotbombswpb has been sharing food for 16 years as direct action against war, imperialism, and capitalism.

The ordinance with which they’re being cited requires permits for events that feed 25+ people and only allows two permits per year per location. While Food Not Bombs universally stands against permits, this particular ordinance is designed to make compliance impossible and force the group to shut down.

However the community is fighting back! Students, community gardens, other Food Not Bombs chapters, journalists, socialists, and anarchists have rallied behind these food shares since the police began their campaign of harassment five months ago. Police will not be able to shut these food shares down.

Now all eyes now look to the Courts. FTL famously lost a similar case in federal court to @foodnotbombsftlauderdale and now WPB stands to as well.
