"John Gruber Doesn’t Know What He’s Talking About"
https://wedistribute.org/2023/06/john-gruber-no-understand/
I don't know @deadsuperhero, it seems to me that like many of those I've seen defending the #AntiFedIMetaPact, you shift a lot goalposts, and a lot of innocent strawman are collatoral damage. I tend towards agreeing with Jon here. Not because I disagree with the things you say, most of them I do agree with, as you know. But rather because I don't think they're a substantial response to the deeper issues he raises.
Some folks from social.coop have done an amazing job of mapping out the arguments for and against federating with Meta's Chains(1) server, if and when it starts federating over AP:
https://pad.disroot.org/p/Social.coop_Threads.net_argument_map
(1) I refuse to call it "Threads", as I see this as an attempt to trademark and thus privatise a generic term commonly used in the verse, and the web in general.

One way to think about Threads is that its like East Germany, before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Would we really have told East Germans back then, that they had a choice between staying there, or leaving and losing all contact with any family and friends who remain there?
That's what we're doing if the admins of other instances fully Defederate/ Block Threads. Mastodon admins also have the option to Limit, which is worth looking into. Not sure about other fediverse software.
"Is the goal of the Fediverse to be anti-corporate/anti-commercial, or to be pro-openness?"

I have huge respect for Jon Gruber - especially after his brave and empathetic talk on the many harms of public shaming ("Cancel Culture") - so I'm going to take some time to unpack this.
