Spent Saturday at an extremely muddy #WickhamFolkFestival. Great sets by #KathrynTickellAndTheDarkening and #FishermansFriends amongst others. But the highlight for me was the fantastic #NoGoodBoyo who despite being on very early in the day and confronting a slightly confused crowd in leafy Hampshire with their #WelshIndy, #AntiMonarchy and #AntiTory tracks, still managed to get them bouncing in the end

I so hate this idolization of aristocracy in RPGs, movies, books, videogames, fantasy, SF, or fake-ass steampunk shit, doesn't matter. Kill all the kings and princesses. I've always been anti-monarchist, even more after I learned more of the less sugar-coated side of the Habsburg Empire, and the way Austrian tourism in particular presents us as this quaint little backwards paradise in the Alps that hasn't changed at all in the last 100+ years never ceases to annoy me. You could also argue that Austrian society, by and large, still remains some mentalities that don't really go together with a democratic country (just look at the reactions to any mass protests).

What annoys me even more is: the moment any of the so-called royal families anywhere in Europe do something newsworthy, a significant chunk of the Austrian media is ALL OVER IT, and it triggers all of the nostalgia for "the good old days when we still had something to say in Europe".

It's the 21st century. Society has evolved past the need for monarchies. And my English friends deserve to live in a country that doesn't waste billions on an unemployed family that thinks they should get special treatment by right of birth.

These are laws signed by Charles Windsor, in other words, the king himself, in effect today:

* Protesters who block roads, airports and railways could face 12 months behind bars.

* Anyone locking on to others, objects or buildings could go to prison for six months and face an unlimited fine.

* Police will be able to head off disruption by stopping and searching protesters if they suspect they are setting out to cause chaos.

Can anybody please just make up your own laws and sign them into existence? No. There's reason for this. It'd be fascism (and utterly anti-democratic).

Monarchy needs to be removed.
