A White colleague wanting to include Black and Brown skin in her lecture slides asked Starr Knight, MD, to pose for her. That’s just one microaggression of many that needs purposeful daily work to build . bit.ly/3HXpavD

Today was one of those days where it was emphasised that so many of the challenges my clients face are systemic and made worse due to a lack of resources. It is frustrating because our society treats so many issues as problems for the individual rather than acknowledging the pressures that increased disconnection, cost-of-living pressures, and so many other social factors place on people.

Seeing a lot of people trotting out versions the often misattributed quote about trying the same thing and expecting different results.

As usual, XKCD has a relevant comic.

Apart from it being a trite cliche it is also ableist in terms of pathologising such behaviour. All kinds of people make choices that, when viewed from outside, seem pointless or flawed.

We can criticise behaviour but let's leave the ableist slurs out.

Radical social work practice recognizes:

‼️Social problems do not reside with individuals‼️

✳️Instead, social problems are structural and failures of policy✳️

Radical social workers:

✔️Are challengers of the status quo.
✔️Meaningfully engage & collaborate with lived experience communities.
✔️Gather evidence & critically analyze.
✔️Advocate and strategize to bring about equitible policy change.

People who use ableist and body shaming language to dunk on public figures are sending a message that they aren't allies to neurodivergent and people with body differences.

If someone is a shitty person, talk about their crappy beliefs, criticize their shitty behaviour. Using ableist slurs and body shaming language implies that those elements are the problem rather than the actual issue.

Quote Calendar 📆

"A freedom which is interested only in denying freedom must be denied. And it is not true that the recognition of the freedom of others limits my own freedom: to be free is not to have the power to do anything you like; it is to be able to surpass the given toward an open future; the existence of others as a freedom defines my situation and is even the condition of my own freedom..."

Quote Calendar Day # 12

"All too often, when we see injustices, both great and small, we think, That's terrible, but we do nothing. We say nothing. We let other people fight their own battles. We remain silent because silence is easier. Qui tacet consentire videtur is Latin for 'Silence gives consent.' When we say nothing, when we do nothing, we are consenting to these trespasses against us."

Quote Calendar Day # 8

"Whether the mask is labeled fascism, democracy, or dictatorship of the proletariat, our great adversary remains the apparatus—the bureaucracy, the police, the military. Not the one facing us across the frontier of the battle lines, which is not so much our enemy as our brothers' enemy, but the one that calls itself our protector and makes us its slaves..." 1/2
