I remember the first times I visited Prague and bought loads of used sheets of music very cheep for my two sons, full scores, or for viola and cello, chamber music etc. They were both part of orchestras up to university level. Plus had ind. lessons from about age 9

1️⃣ I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time searching for one book: The Freedman’s Primer by the American Tract Society in Boston. It was first published in 1864. A couple years later, the title was changed to the Lincoln Primer. Fortunately a copy of the latter still exists.

I got a few more items scanned this weekend. A Concise History of the United States is probably the most interesting of the bunch. It was first compiled by John M'Culloch in 1806; this is the 4th edition from 1813.
I also scanned The New American Primer by Martin Ruter, The Union Spelling-Book by the American Sunday School Union and The Tract Primer by the American Tract Society in NY.

I’ve added seven new public domain books to my collection on the Internet Archive. Most are school books from the 1860s-1870s.
Five of them were made specifically to educate formerly enslaved Black Americans: The Bible Word Method, The Golden Primer, The Golden First Reader, The United States First Reading Book and The United States Second Reading Book.

The Bible Reader was one of the first books used to teach formerly enslaved Black refugees during the civil war. It was first published in 1862 by the American Sunday School Union.
It’s a very simple textbook composed almost entirely of Bible passages.
You can read the entire book online for free courtesy of Princeton Theological Seminary.
