1/2 I just finished the small elm bookshelf and have my latest post up on the website:

This bookshelf was a chance for me to get out of a rut. I've been working with pieces where I need to color match my repairs to the original, so it was nice to be able to go back to an old favorite.

1/3 I've made a bit of progress on the shelf I started yesterday.
I disassembled it, and then cleaned the pieces.
At this point I saw that there was just too much damage to the shelves and legs to leave it, so I ended up sanding all the pieces down. I don't normally sand pieces down, because it removes much of the character (and patina) of a piece. It also goes against the 'conservation' side of furniture restoration.

I've started yet another restoration project, even though I still have 4 or 5 others I haven't finished yet. This one got me thinking about how I decide where to conserve, where to repair, and where to restore.
In this case, it's a small bookshelf from the mid 1900s. It was never a high end piece, but it was made well enough to last almost 100 years, and it isn't actually falling apart, but does need some TLC.

It's been too long since I've done any #woodworking or #antiquefurniturerestoration but I finally made it back out to the shop.
I've been working on the small elm stand on and off for more than a year (about 40 hours so far).
Right now I'm replacing the bottom, which was also a replacement (done very badly).
I have a pretty good write-up of this project on the website.

My most recent project was a #antiquefurniturerestoration of a piece of #victorianfurniture (a slant top secretaire).

When I started, I thought it would be a pretty straightforward restore and I'd have it finished in no time. That idea went out the window as soon as I started taking the piece apart.
I ended up doing some pretty major repairs, replaced all of the hardware, and then color-matched all of the repairs.

My #Fensterfreitag picture this week is of the Chippendale International School of Furniture in Scotland. I spent an amazing 9 months there studying #furnituremaking #antiquefurniturerestoration #woodcarving #gilding #woodveneer For the first 3 or 4 months that we were there, my wife and I would just blurt out, "We're in Scotland!" and then giggle like absolute idiots.

@Sardonicus As a furnituremaker and antique furniture restorer, this kind of video whets the appetite. The hidden drawers and such don't excite me as much as the level of craftsmanship that I can see in the video. #furniturerestoration #furnituremaking #antiquefurniturerestoration #antiquefurniture #18thCentury

@myrtti I agree completely. I think a crafts category should be added. #woodworking #weaving #antiquefurniturerestoration #furnituremaking #greenwoodworking #woodcarving #gilding

My #introduction follows:
I'm Steve aka Blaidd Drwg and my age is up there a ways. I'm a big #whovian and a bit of a #trekkie, but my main interests are #woodworking #antiquefurniturerestoration and now getting into #weaving
My website is https://blaidd-drwg.com

I'm slowly bringing some of my Instagram posts over. I never really used FB or the little birdy and almost all of my Instagram posts are related to my furniture making, antique furniture restoration, and woodworking so my posts will mostly consist of my projects. I am also learning to weave so there will probably be some of that in here as well. #woodworking #traditionalwoodworking #traditionalfurnituremaking #traditionalfurniturerestoration #antiquefurniturerestoration

The most recent furniture restoration project I finished was a slant top victorian secretaire. I worked on it in the evenings and on weekends so it took quite a while to finish, but I'm happy with how it turned out.
