A common technique for spammers is to rely on pages that display URL parameters on the page. For example, you get a search result page that says something like

No pages with found with "Meet sexy women at sexy-woman.example.com"

usually in Korean or Chinese.

Spammers assume that Google etc will index these pages as referring pages to their website.

So it's helpful to detect this and return a 400 or 404 status code.

HOW TO SPOT PRIVACY LEAKS EASILY

1. Register a DNS domain.

Example: ownlifeful.com

2. Create an email address for yourself.

3. Create a catch-all email alias, and forward it to your email address.

* @ ownlifeful.com

=> forwards to

ashwin@ownlifeful.com

4. From here on, give a custom email address to every web site that asks you to register.

Example: If you create a microsoft.com account, give your email as microsoft@ownlifeful.com

5. If you ever receive SPAM on microsoft@ownlifeful.com, then you have tangible evidence to sue Microsoft ( for example ).

Charging money for services that lets customers interact with other people can be a method to prevent spammers registering 1000 accounts and spamming everyone on a social network.

If there's a cost, a spammer will have to think how much money they want to pay for their #spam.

The instance owner will also get richer the more spam a #spammer decides to send on their instance.

I was waiting for the day somebody will understand that the #floss software that Mastodon is allows commercial use.

I was worried that people were gonna get the wrong idea about what floss is.

Now they'll learn that floss can be used commercially. Any instance can start charging money if they want.

Charging money on any website that lets you interact with others fills the purpose of #antispam measures.

For those that use WordPress and the great plugin Contact Form 7 and/or have enabled Comment Form reducing spam has always been a challenge. However, we have added another, fully automated solution to handle sending spam.
