It's been a few days since I've opened the enclosure for her colony, so she must have been lost in the apartment for several days. She managed to not get eaten by a spider or by #pica! (yes Pica will eat ants)

The astonishing art of aquarium landscape art: Made for fish, but I want these kinds of worlds for ants. For that to work they'd need to be durable, and on a much smaller scale... but this gives me some ideas for the new outworld I'm making for the coming carpenter ant population boom.
Also, with ants ... they shape their environment. They will tear up your plants, move all your sand. Designs must work with not against "ant ideas" of design. It's hard! #antkeeping #ants

One of my many hobbies... Camponotus castaneus ants coming out of diapause are laying eggs again. Sorry for lack of a good macro shot, but the yellow orange bean shaped objects are this season's eggs and some larvae are white.
Also added water into the outworld of the Pogonomyrmex occidentalis ants. This colony had a whole 1-2 week diapause before getting active again. These are not really primary sources of water, but gives the workers something to do.

It has a little water mote and lets you interact with the ants close up and take photos. I might modify it to have its own lighting system. There is so such thing as "too much light" when photographing ants.

I want to try blacklighting in NYC starting in march.
Everyone on the ant forum says it won't work in NYC, but we found a Camponotus pennslyvanicus queen on our roof last summer just wandering around... so insects do fly in NYC.

One of my other hobbies... Keeping ants. Not a super common one, but it's interesting none the less. (I am very aware the test tubes are empty, but they have an additional water source and haven't been in a mood to let me take them...)
I enjoy designing setups for them, often 3D printed (sometimes 3D printing and cast into other material)
Also note they *love* dandelion seeds but dislike coconut
