I came across this on todays hike. A very common calling card left by male deer. It's usually seen low down on small saplings. A black tail buck deer rubbed the bark off one side of the sapling with his antlers. You'll see shredded bark fibers at the top and bottom from rubbing up and down. Elk do this too. (Bear and cat marks look different.)
