I shot this quite pretty ant today.
And a part of me reaaaaally want to go back where I saw it to take one individual and try to identify it to species. It's really impossible to be sure without it.
But a part of me knows it's already nice to be at subgenus level.
I still don't know what part I'll listen to.

Winter ants (_Prenolepis imparis_) were flying today in Toronto!

These hardy, cold-loving little ants are active until quite late in the year and are the first in the spring to have nuptial flights. The female alates are lovely big golden-brown creatures.

“cone ants” or “pyramid ants” live in the southern US hence they are active all winter. Most people think they are named because they make little cone shaped sand piles at their nest entrance— but the real reason is morphology. They have a little cone on their back. Just added meat back to their diet and they are having a massive egg-boom. Used this amber light to show of their colors. Pogonomyrmex occidentalis (or as most call them ‘pogos’) have wide heads and simple little eyes. They mostly eat seeds and can in theory live on a vegetarian diet— but like most ants they can’t resist a dead fly, cricket, or roach. #antstodon #ants #pogos #Pogonomyrmex #harvesterants #cutebabies

This is the #camponotus nicoborensis queen. She may seem sweet, harmless, but she murdered her sister last year. They WERE a multi-queen colony— girl did not want to share the throne. I imagine her giving an exclusive interview w/ Oprah or Anderson Cooper:

Everyone on the ant forum says it won't work in NYC, but we found a Camponotus pennslyvanicus queen on our roof last summer just wandering around... so insects do fly in NYC.
