With a switch to a new phone, I have taken the decision to fully get rid of X/Twitter. So can we please make **this here to place to be** for the perfect mix of academia talk and misc stuff? Currently I feel that LinkedIn is winning the X/Twitter replacement game for exchange about new research etc. But I'd much prefer to have this conversation here. The @AoIR instance had given take-up quite a boost in my community, but I fear it wasn't enough #twitter #mastodon #linkedIn #academia #meta #AoIR

I'm going to make an explainer video for AoIR.social, starting today. I'll cover the basics -- signing up, setting up your profile, following people, posting, etc.
I'll also talk about governance, including how we drafted our #CodeOfConduct (and how you can get involved if you think it should be amended).
Are there any other things you want me to cover, #AOIR #AoIR2023?

Hi, #AoIR friends!
With the news that X/Twitter has deleted photos from their servers, a quick reminder that you can easily export your media and posts from Mastodon if you are concerned about saving them.
https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/#export
There are many projects that allow for viewing your archive.
Whether you're using Mastodon or Twitter, you are using "someone else's computer," as the saying goes. Consider making backups on occasion.
Sometimes research projects basically write themselves up I guess?!
Adam Mosseri confirming that a big component of what they hope will make Threads distinctive is mood management and calibration so as to keep the platform clean from anger, negativity, and bad vibes (and in so doing make it super brand-friendly I suppose)

Hello #AoIR folks! Here is my late #introduction: I'm an Assistant Lecturer in the Deparment of Media Studies at Maynooth University, Ireland where I also received my PhD. My research focuses on platformed cultural production, paying attention to complex relationships between platforms, creator labour, and nation states. And yes, I am that person who received the AoIR 2023 dissertation award. Here is the link for my dissertation: https://mural.maynoothuniversity.ie/16798/
@ZoeGlatt Oh know, I didn't know that 🙉 But wondering that it remains surprisingly silent for that chatty community.

My new paper-in-progress with @tstruett and @paufder (and an assist from @rwg) is now live on Peertube. It's part of the Warwick University #Mastodon Research Symposium:

The #AoIR dissertation award winner for 2023 has been announced!
The winner of the 2023 award is Tuğçe Bidav of Maynooth University for her dissertation, "Global Platform, Local Labour: Precarious YouTubing in Ireland and Turkey". Congratulations, Tuğçe!

Excited to go back to my PhD home @MediaLSE for the #LSEMediaFutures conference later this week. I’ll be chairing the panel on ‘Nonhuman Intelligence’ on Thursday 11.30am, and look forward to seeing familiar and new faces, and celebrating the 20y of the department 🎉

Hello, #AoIR friends!
This server has a Code of Conduct:
Obviously, you should read it if you haven't had a chance, but more importantly: give feedback on it! It's a draft document. It has been through several rounds of revision, but there's no reason we can't refine it further.
If you have comments on it, DM me, or if you're comfortable, post them publicly using the tag #AoIRCOC.
I'm new to #AoIR and #fediverse, but feels like a warm sunbeam here. So cozy. Helping with intellectual withdrawal post-ICA.
I'm a 2nd year PhD student at UIC. Studying tech, culture, politics after (too)-long career in PR industry. Fallen down the digital nostalgia hole, obsessed with media, temporality, knowledge, and belonging. Alum UChicago (sociology) + Duke (public policy). Francophile + mom. Uses she/her pronouns.
Excited to present at #AoIR2023 this fall!

@rickf @michaelzimmer Also -- having come back from #ICA23 feeling like I don't really "fit" with the model for Student and Early Career Scholar programming, I'm thinking about starting/coalescing something through #AoIR aimed at "early career" scholars with alternative pathways into academia. I'm wondering (and hopeful) that #AoIR may be a good vehicle for this kind of community. Are you aware of any programs that support students/early career scholars coming from industry --> academia?
