The band from Portugal are one of the hottest talents in Black Metal today. This album has been on heavy rotation since it was released.

2nd on my top 25 albums list is Ecstasies of Neverending Night by Devil Master

Glorious spooky mix of black metal, punk and goth that adds up to a tremendous album. It's melodic, it's brawny and it's more than a little bit camp.

3rd on my top 25 albums list is Close by Messa

A raw and powerful piece of stripped back ambient sludgy doom from Italy. It's permeated by musical influences from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures with sultry haunting vocals.

4th on my top 25 albums list is Marter by Firtan

One of those albums where it was love at first listen. This is German pagan black metal with exquisite riffs and poetic lyrics conjurer a gorgeous atmosphere that kept me coming back.

5th on my top 25 albums list is Rakshak by Bloodywood

I've been following these guys for a few years their debut album was highly anticipated by me. Mixing nu metal with traditional Indian folk music styles and instruments. They probably (definitely are) the most accessible band on the list.

6th on my top 25 albums list is Carnage Funeral by Bonecarver

Madrid based death metal that blast you with devastating barbaric vocals, relentless drumming and belligerent riffage to make you void your bowel.

7th on my top 25 albums list is Unison Life by Brutus

This Belgian trio create their own brand of post hardcore that defies convention and labelling. It makes for a brutal but beautiful visceral listening experience.

8th on my top 25 albums list is Hiss by Wormrot

The Singaporean grindcore outfit certainly provide the listener with value for money. Across the 21 songs on the album there are vicious riffs, guttural vocals and puverising blast beats.

Atmospheric black metal with lyrical themes based on native American mythology. This one man project is drenched in sorrow and is driven throughout by fierce guitars.

Danish death doom with riffs as sharp as an eagles talons and heavier than a portly polar bear.

11th on my top 25 albums list is Liminal Rite by Kardashev

Technical death metal at it's very best. Vocals go from coarse gravelly growls to brittle, vulnerable cleans. It effortlessly flows through different styles but it's always rich and intense.

Nobody is more surprised than me to find a trad metal album so high on my end of the year list. However, the ridiculously catchy riffs and sweeping orchestral soundscape had me hooked from the first listen.

Old school death metal but done in a way that makes it fresh and vibrant. Thunderous riffs go at a fair old lick throughout, repeatedly slamming your skull til you go crying to your mummy.

It's a chunky wodge of blackened progressive death metal. Throughout the album, an atmosphere of stark wretchedness is conjured. A record that must be played as intended in entirety to be fully appreciated.

Atmospheric pagan black metal tinged with gorgeous Finnish folk instrumentals. A haunting album beautifully crafted from flowing flutes, tribal sounds and piano blended with gritty guitars, thumping drums and harsh vocal growls.

18th on my top 25 albums list, With The Magic Of Windfyre Steel by Power Paladin.

The only power metal album to make it on to this list. The debut album of the band from Iceland is 51 minutes of blistering paced melodic fun. Hopefully this shows I'm not all doom and gloom 😂
