The Androgynous Peripheral Attach System, #APAS, was put into production to aid the joint #US-#Soviet #space mission, the #Apollo-#Soyuz Test Project (#ASTP).
An American Apollo craft and a Soviet Soyuz would rendezvous in orbit and dock.
Existing docking systems were “probe and drogue” type, and relied on an “active” component to enter a “passive” side of the docking system.
APAS was preferable to forcing one partner to not have an active role in the docking, as well as solved the engineering challenge on how to fit a new docking port on the Soyuz.
The US had to develop an adapter.
The USSR continued developing a new version of APAS to use with their shuttle, Buran.
The Kristall Mir module had 2 APAS docking ports that Buran would have used, but Buran’s APAS system was converted for use on the American Shuttle so it could dock.
