The "average Joe" is a westernised person who is exposed to the "mainstream" westernised lifestyle & "mainstream" social media: The 9 to 5 routine, the TV channels, the radio ga ga, the news cycle, the snooze papers, the trending tweets, the "viral" media posts. The dominant, the usual, the typical, the group think. The same old, on repeat.

The (false) promise of populists is that they somehow represent the silent majority; all those nonvoters. By pandering hard, they promise to be able to motivate the apolitical and apathetic into voting, which will lead to instant victory. Per the parenthetical, this is a lie.

It is a lie because the populists do not, in fact, represent the majority of potential voters, and never will. Populism is exclusionary by its very nature; it claims to represent “The People” but necessarily defines these to exclude most of the actual people. Moreover, it is empirically known that no amount of pandering would get nonvoters off their lazy butts and into the booths.

Fundamentally, someone who doesn’t want to vote is voting: they’re expressing their willingness to accept whatever the actual voters choose. It’s like checking a box labeled “Do Not Care” or “You Decide For Me”.

If you forced them to cast a vote, as I’m told some countries do, there’s no reason to think that their choice would be better than random. In fact, we should expect the apathetic to be easily swayed by mere familiarity, giving incumbents and the well-funded a huge advantage (on top of the one they already have).

So, I just criticized populism, quite fairly, for their bad take on a solution to voter apathy, but I don’t have any bright ideas, myself. Mostly, good governing leads to an educated, engaged citizenry, but that’s a chicken-and-egg problem. Or, if you prefer, a pinning the bell on the cat problem.

I do wonder whether drug-induced #dissociation will feel different from, uh, dissociation that isn't induced by drugs. I've experienced drug-induced suicidality sans #depression once, & that was terrifying.

Suicidality is often accompanied by depression, & that usually brings #apathy into the mix, making one less likely to act on it. But in a drug-induced one, IME, the apathy isn't there. Plus if you had a plan & the means like I did at the time, yikes. 🧵

Yes, we must act. But not devalue our cause by overreacting to the opposite extreme.

If you try to explain to an adult that their newly installed wood burner, or new 4*4 diesel vehicle emits air pollution which harms everyone, even more so children & older people, but on hearing this they seem annoyed at you, you are right to think "what is wrong with this friggin person?"

However, it's unlikely you will change their attitude because they evidently care more about their wood burner & diesel vehicle. They also enjoy grandstanding
