noticed that aphids have taken over the top of this milkweed plant, then noticed a ladybug already arrived!

An aphid of some sort. Note that this one extrudes white lacy stuff. That helps to disguise it, and also if something does try to eat it, they may end up with the extrusions rather than the aphid.

Ants farming aphids in late May in Central Park. Ants will gather up aphids and protect them in exchange for sugary liquids that the aphids occasionally extrude.

Some aphids in Central Park. I do not know enough about aphids to identify the different species.

Aphid trouble? Umbulate plants like parsley, carrots, cilantro and dill flowers provide great food for and attract hoverflies and tiny parasitoid wasps whose larva will devour (or parasitize) your aphid problem. Cilantro and dill will flower quick, carrots and parsley will next year. #gardening #plants #aphids @plants

Field margins can provide biological control services to #crops (conservation biological control) by promoting populations of natural enemies of #pests. However, not all field margins are equally useful - a study on cereal #aphids indicates how field margins can be assessed and managed - article in Insects (2023, vol. 14, issue 2, article 153) by by Agnès Salat-Moltó and others - https://doi.org/10.3390/insects14020156
An update on #GreenLacewing larvae: They were voracious, and I have not had any aphid problems. They ran out of stuff to eat, and they cannibalized each other. The larvae were small enough that nobody noticed them unless I made a point of showing them. They liked to hide, and remained near plants. I never saw an adult, so they were either eaten by carnivorous plants or just flew outside when I was not looking. Absolutely worth the cost, and fun to watch if you are not skittish about bugs. #pests #houseplant #aphids #BeneficialInsects #IndoorGardening

The other day I noticed that my indoor #HydroponicGarden where I grow my winter salad greens - lettuces, bok choy, kale and mustards - had some #aphids lurking in it. So just as I was about to go to bed the other night I was on a #ladybird hunt and found 3 hiding in another part of the house. I was able to transfer them into the garden and lost sight of them until this morning when I found these 2 mating as you see. I guess they're finding enough to eat. I hope I don't regret this.
