The two metal structures are the flame #deflectors, which are meant to sit under the #launch table during launch to divert #rocket #exhaust away from the #vehicle to avoid thermal, acoustic, or debris issues, as well as to minimize damage to #pad #infrastructure.
Theses #FlameDeflectors were used at LC-34 for the #Saturn I and the larger, wider one was used for the upgraded Saturn IB. Flame delflectors are meant to divert the #exhaust of a #rocket as it #launches to protect the #vehicle and #pad #infrastructure.
After the #Apollo Program was finished, #LC34’s tower was dismantlted to prevent its uncontrolled collapse due to rust from the salt spray. The rest was #abandoned in place and a #memorial #plaque and kiosk were to memorialize the deaths of astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee during the Apollo 1 fire.

Outside Moffitt Library on the UC Berkeley campus are several display cases with reprinted newspaper front pages from around the world.
On Fridays, one case is dedicated to a historical event that took place that week. This was yesterday’s, the LA Times front page from January 28, 1967. #apollo1
Here is a CBS News special report on the #Apollo1 tragedy 56 years ago #OTD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSWUnWOMdTk - it had aired on the same evening and came with a lot of background information, not on the cause of the accident, of course, but on the #Apollo program in general.

I’ll never forget the #Apollo1 tragedy of 1967, when my friends Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were lost in the capsule fire. I think of the quote ‘ad astra per aspera’ meaning “through hardships to the stars.” We remember them today, as they did not perish in vain.
