This photograph was taken at 40,000 feet by a nearby aircraft as Apollo 8 reentered the Earth's atmosphere. #Apollo8, the first manned mission to the moon, launched on December 21, 1968 and entered lunar orbit on #ChristmasEve, Dec. 24—54 years ago. That evening, the #astronauts—Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders—held a live broadcast from lunar orbit, in which they showed the #Earth and #moon as seen from their #spacecraft. They ended the broadcast with the crew taking turns reading from the book of #Genesis.

While orbiting the Moon on #christmaseve 1968, the astronauts broadcast directly to the people on Earth; it was the largest television audience in history (to that point), estimated at half a billion people. The three former pilots gave some impressions from the greatest test flight of their lives.

#OTD December 24, 1968 - #Apollo8 arrived at the moon, swinging around the backside. If they continued to coast, they would simply be slingshot back towards Earth. Around the backside, they had to fire their rocket in reverse to slow down and achieve a lunar orbit. For these 30 minutes, their communication was completely cut off, their home planet disappearing behind the lunar horizon. The greatest solitude yet experienced in human history.
