#OTD December 24, 1968 - #Apollo8 arrived at the moon, swinging around the backside. If they continued to coast, they would simply be slingshot back towards Earth. Around the backside, they had to fire their rocket in reverse to slow down and achieve a lunar orbit. For these 30 minutes, their communication was completely cut off, their home planet disappearing behind the lunar horizon. The greatest solitude yet experienced in human history.

Aviator Charles Lindbergh was born before the Kitty Hawk flights. As a young man in 1927, he made a daring, first of it's kind flight across the Atlantic Ocean from NYC all the way to Paris.
