'Tingible body macrophages (TBMs) are tasked with apoptotic cell clearance to prevent secondary necrosis and autoimmune activation by intracellular self antigens. We show by multiple redundant and complementary methods that TBMs derive from a lymph node-resident, CD169-lineage, CSF1R-blockade-resistant precursor that is prepositioned in the follicle.'

Here's a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image of #bone showing mineralized #collagen and an #osteocyte lacuna containing microcalcifications of #apatite and #whitlockite.
Such #calcification or #mineral formation is part of normal physiological processes such as #apoptosis but can also indicate #pathology.
The specimen was prepared using focussed ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM).

The implications for my own work are intriguing so I'll be interested to see how this work ultimately played out.
