Since migrating* to macOS Catastrophe I've been fighting to get an Apple Mail rule to work that always used to work. After a LOT of debugging it seems that I can't trash a message if I'm also going to run an AppleScript. The script gets an invalid message ID and can't read any of the fields.

Even separating the script and move to trash in separate rules doesn't work because they run asynchronously. How dopey is that?

TIL that #AppleMail allows a Google/Chrome link in an Apple Mail html-formatted email to pop up #Google/#Chrome logins screens in new browser tabs -- even when I didn't yet have the #Brave browser running this morning.

Google/Chrome auto-started Brave, auto-loaded the Chrome login page, and sat waiting for me.

I had six login tabs open when I finally realized what was going on, one for each time I looked at that Apple mail in either full or simple html-view mode

Given the heartache I've been having with Apple Mail in Catalina recently I thought I might want to try out the now free Outlook for Mac. That is, until I found out it's still not AppleScriptable after all these years although it's coming Real Soon Now™. So that's a show-stopper.

It's become a morning ritual to Force Quit Apple Mail because it hung overnight. I tried logging the incoming mail but either it hangs before running the rule, or it hangs without incoming messages. I turned on connection logging. Hopefully that will provide more information.

Boy, I sure like being Apple's unpaid tester.

Since Apple Mail has been hanging nightly, I decided to write a mail rule to log to a text file the incoming messages thinking a particular message may be the culprit.

TIL that Mail decides occasionally to run the same rule 2 or 4 times for the same message.

Apple Mail has decided to hang overnight every night lately. Each morning I have to force quit it to get it to work again. It seems to be fine until sometime later in evening.

The best I have found that can do the job is still #AppleMail. And even it’s not spectacular at it.

Out of the blue Apple Mail has decided to randomly hang on any interaction with the IMAP server, like deleting or sending email. I have to Force Quit and relaunch and then it's fine for awhile. I'm long past expending any effort writing up feedback to Apple as it goes into a black hole and they don't mix most bugs anyway.

I think I need to install a key logger on my computer for those times that … oh, I don't know … Apple Mail lets me compose a complex email message and then hangs while sending it forcing me to kill the app, relaunch, and discover the message was not sent and isn't in the outbox or drafts folders. At least I could rebuild the email by replaying the key logger.
