I'm a cradle #Catholic. I did all the stuff (Baptism, Fist Communion, Confirmation) as a wee lad. I was born here all my life. When I was around four years old, the church kicked out my mom and, by extension, my family. I explored other faiths, #meditation, #yoga, #Buddhism, and all the things. I wanted to not convert to a religion or practice that I had not been born to or wasn't otherwise ancestrally connected. I explored Protestant fellowships but soon began seeking "the deeper things" back in the lives of saints. This led to a deep dive into the #EarlyChurch Fathers and early church history. Entering the #OrthodoxChurch, I lived in several monasteries and wandered around the US like the guy in Way of a Pilgrim. I was ultimately drawn to #Theosis and the #PrayerOfTheHeart, sometimes called the #JesusPrayer. That church became tedious as well. Long story short, decades later, a pandemic, and a few ends of the world here I am. I recently stumbled across a podcast called the #PopeFrancisGeneration. I'm intrigued. I am listening. Let's see where my current studies lead.

@ajroach42 Here's my homework. Just read a little of your blog, thanks to a boost by @dgar. Yes! Yes! Yes! Smaller tech, or as it's called in some engineering circles, #appropriatetechnology, is definitely the way to go. Smaller and in greater diversity. My own contribution to make here is more the ideas for social change than engineering change. I'm a sound engineer (not an engineer) and a self-taught electronics engineer. I'm a consensus anarchist. I believe that there is a capitalist corporate model that could serve anarcho-community enterprise, what we call in Australia and Britain, the "proprietary limited" or private company - co-ops. Structure these with one equal share per member and charter them to create community value based on evidence models, rather than profit, and we have a framework for a quiet, background revolution in thinking. From each according to their skill, to each according to joint community connection and community value created. Employment and commerce that values people, skills and community. Built on a framework used by capital, but used to subvert capital.

I also make filthy noises that I call music and believe in open source arts as well as seeing open source software as collectivism over commercialism. Value over profit.

At a time of need, intermediate technology comes to the rescue.

Intermediate or appropriate technology occupies that territory between low/traditional tech and hi-tech. It is more accessible than hi-tech costwise and can often, as in the case in the photo, make use of reusable materials. It can be fabricated locally with basic skills.

But, war stimulates innovation. Innovation is make-do with what is at hand. Innovation exists where there is a need. Russia’s war is what stimulated the innovation we see in the photograph. With electricity supply destroyed, the need is for heating. So what is there that is laying around that can be made into heaters? Car rims. Steel car rims turned into heaters and fuelled by wood.

Speculative fiction author, Cory Doctorow, could have been talking about this production of car rim heaters when he wrote in his Book, Makers: “This thing wasn’t invented. All the parts necessary to make this go were just lying around. It was assembled.”

Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant, wrote Horace. And, here, during this awful war forced on a people by a greedy, authoritarian state, adversity has done just that.

I can't sleep because since 2008 major shipping companies have been running their freighters slower and slower to save on gas, to the point where sometimes they'll take over 100 days to cross the Pacific.

For context, I'm pretty sure in the 1500's Magellan sailed across the Pacific in about 98 days.

We're going so slow to save fuel that we're actually going slower than the ships that don't use fuel.

TALES OF TECH SOLUTIONS…
Lunch time. So, let’s get the cooker out, toss some suasages in the frypan, cook then until thet are dark and crispy on the outside, pour on the tomato sauce and eat.

It must have been something like that which went through this couples head as lunchtime approached. They were out in the countryside near Windsor, NSW, not all that far inland of Sydney.

Their solar stove folds so it is easier to transport. I think it is a homemade job. Whatever, it works. Soon those sausages were sizzling, their aroma making those nearby hungry.

Devices like this used to be called intermediate technologies because thay sat between low-tech and hi-tech on the technology development scale.
