RCV/IRV poses a serious risk to election security by introducing a requirement for a centralized single point of failure.
The current ability to have distributed counting and checks and balances at all of the different physical locations makes it much harder to attack the counting of elections in a way that affects the outcome.
Changing the election system to remove these safeguards is not a smart thing to do!
"You can't solve the problems of plurality by just iterating plurality over and over again."
Just switching from plurality to a scoring system would be a great move!
Don't be fooled by RCV/IRV, it hides the same vote-splitting behavior found in plurality behind complexity and would significantly slow down election results.

@skaverat I like how “return to normal operations” got *negative* votes. It's just that unpopular.
Side note: what if political #elections worked this way? You can vote up or down any or all candidates as you wish, and whoever has the highest score wins the election. Basically #ApprovalVoting, but with downvotes too.
Plurality really was the worst voting system to select!
Please don't be fooled by RCV/IRV though, we have known for decades that it won't fix vote splitting.
I think the best way to get more than two parties is to have a federal law that requires elections to use one of the approved voting systems in every state.
Plurality and RCV/IRV do not improve the situation because they both allow vote splitting.

RCV/IRV is worse than just keeping plurality, in my opinion.

> ls it good enough, and if not, would it hinder movement towards a sufficient fix.
RCV/IRV fails both of those tests too.
- not good enough (vote splitting and undone after being tried more than half the time)
- hinders more appropriate fixes (states are starting to ban all reforms after discovering the "hidden" failures of RCV/IRV)
This is why I support Approval or STAR instead.
How to actually eliminate vote-splitting?
Hint: it isn't plurality or RCV/IRV as FairVote wants you to believe.
Simulating elections shows the really odd behaviors RCV/IRV has for more than two candidates very clearly.
Adding more candidates results in much more strange behavior.
This contest between five candidates only has three possible winners with plurality, and only STAR Voting shows the expected outcomes.
Australia is a fine example of how RCV/IRV or "alternative vote" results in a two-party system. It also has really hard to comprehend behaviors with three or more candidates.

This is also a fun video about voting in Australia:

It's worth the time to understand the downsides of RCV/IRV before proclaiming it as a solution.

I have posted some videos covering this too.

"approval voting can go right into the Charter"

RT @Pat_Christmas
Electoral reform should absolutely be discussed following this election. #RCV would require legislation in Harrisburg, as would repealing closed primaries (and allowing indies to vote). But #approvalvoting can go right into the Charter...

Strategic voting exists in most systems. I find it is important to consider how well the system behaves when "tactical" voting is used and not only in the fictional case where that doesn't happen.
No matter if you agree with any individual voter or not, the system needs to perform as advertised to remain credible.
The biggest issue most viewers I know have with Olympic judges is that they can give a score while the viewers can't. 😉
Spending my Sunday evening reading up on #vote counting systems. Ran across two websites, one has nothing nice to say about #ApprovalVoting and nothing but nice to say about #InstantRunnoff (now branded as #RankedChoice), and the other site vice versa. I think none of these #zealots argue in good faith.

@TurboKitty @dallas the Green party would be better served with #ApprovalVoting. #RCV hides second preferences behind the major parties.

Did a quick search & review of #ApprovalVoting vs. #RankedChoice aka #InstantRunoff. Very partisan articles -- each one says why their method is great & the other lousy. Opponents of approval voting say we have not tried it enough to have evidence, therefore we should not try it.

The most attainable and impactful change the USA can make is approval voting.

Multiple member districts would require a huge amount of effort and support to implement. Also, using RCV/IRV for single-winner elections doesn't actually result in changing a two-party outcome.
