"Union officials slammed leaders of the political science organization, which counts more than 11,000 academics and other political scientists as members, for refusing to cancel its L.A. meeting despite the ongoing hotel walkouts.
“Dirty rooms and nonstop noise will be the only amenities”"
LA Times on #APSA breaking the picket line during the #UniteHere #strike:
Not a subtoot (do we use that term?) of anyone on here, but some political scientists’ demands over on the birdsite that we approve of their choice to go to #APSA and declarations that the union’s asks are privileged are ridiculous. And it’s astounding that social scientists do not understand they’re echoing #unionbusting talking points. #apsa2023
:solidarity: Open letter from @labortech expressing solidarity with striking hotel & service workers in #LosAngeles & condemning #APSA's decision to cross the picket line for their conference:

ICYMI, the American Political Science Association #apsa is trying to move #apsa2023 out of the LA Marriott to avoid crossing a picket line. The union has plainly asked them to go online or postpone rather than just moving panels out of the Marriott (people will still stay in rooms there), but certain famous political scientists can’t bring themselves to not go in person, which brings us to the suggestion of…sleeping bags in a meeting room 🙃 @academicchatter #politicalscience #academia

I'm hoping that the organisers of my panel (the Japan Political Studies Group) will move it online or find some other solution that allows panelists to present their work without crossing a picket.
This is my last #APSA though - this whole farce has made it clear how ridiculous it is to pay hundreds of dollars of annual membership fees to an organisation that in no way represents my interests or views. I hope many other scholars will feel likewise.
#APSA finally made a decision and statement regarding running their annual conference during a hotel worker strike and honestly, I preferred it when they had said nothing.
There was no easy decision here, but crossing picket lines is the worst one possible - and this statement insinuates that they're doing this to protect marginalised scholars AND that they actually know better than the union what's good for workers. Pathetic, dissembling nonsense.

Is there any discussion around the #sustainablePolisci petition to alternate holding #APSA et al meetings online only? #politicalScience on here?

I generally think it's a good idea, but would like to hear from folks who dislike it.
Some big names (at least 2 former APSA presidents, e.g.) among early signatories.

Ah, it is again the season of "which professional organization will mess up conference technology most thoroughly"
#APSA here with a strong "our database is already broken" start
Got news this week that Worldmaking in the Long Great War won the Jervis-Schroeder Award for best book from the #APSA International History and Politics section.
Surprised and so honored by this interdisciplinary appreciation!
