The forum and #Byzantine fort in #Madauros in #Algeria. It had been made a #Roman colony for veterans in the first century during the reign of the Emperor Nerva.
The town was the birthplace in 124AD of the Numidian #Apuleius who wrote the only #Latin Roman novel, "The Golden Ass" or "Metamorphoses", to survive fully intact. He also coined the proverb "familiarity breeds contempt."
Saint #Augustine of Hippo studied there in the 4th century.

Another #book to come back to again & again. Magical and quite a lot silly. Like a mad cousin to #ovid & the #metamorphoses / Surprised more people haven’t considered this as an ancient part of the #surrealism canon since it feels like #Apuleius would fit. If at least some of this isn’t pure psychic automatism then I’m not sure what is. #TheGoldenAss #bookstodon

My Italian is not quite good enough to figure out whether this says that they have found a commentary on Plato by Apuleius, but if so, that would be fun.
